*For every SAT Math word problem, there are two things to consider.*The first is what we discussed above, which is to figure out what type of problem you’re dealing with to best identify what you need to do.Or you could do it by the type of solution the problem requires of you.

"Work" problems usually involve situations such as two people working together to paint a house.

You are usually told how long each person takes to paint a similarly-sized house, and you are asked how long it will take the two of them to paint the house when they work together.

For these problems, you are often asked to interpret what a variable or a constant means in the situation described, or you might be asked what kinds of conclusions can be drawn from a survey.

These types of problems often have no “math” involved, and instead ask you to think logically about a situation.

A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Tell them that they can be as silly or creative as they want them to be, but lay down any parameters you feel are necessary (how long they have to be, how many steps they have to include, minimum/maximum value of numbers used). Students should be given a certain amount of time to complete their problem (and have the answer themselves) and then they can swap with their partner. To do this, I simply inverted each value for "hours to complete job": My first step is to list the times taken by each pipe to fill the pool, and how long the two pipes take together. In this case, I know the "together" time, but not the individual times.Wrap Up/Extensions -Students can work together to create a third word problem and then pairs can swap as well.-Optional: Give the students the answer to the problem and they then have to create the word problem that will lead there.Word problems are a great opportunity to bring math and literacy skills together in a format that is concrete and fun. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Watch a math video relevant to what you’re teaching. This lesson asks students to use the math skills they are learning and applying them by creating word problems for their peers to solve. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. This lesson is most easily used within the Operations strand (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) but could also work for Geometry (finding the circumference of circle, the volume of a sphere), Statistics (Mean/median/mode), and other areas of math. After the video, have students answer the Challenge Questions and complete any associated printable exercises. Create a sample word problem that utilizes the type of math operation you’re focusing on.Many of these problems are not terribly realistic — since when can two laser printers work together on printing one report?— but it's the technique that they want you to learn, not the applicability to "real life".When most people hear “word problems,” they often think of the popular example of trains traveling at different speeds, or unrealistic applications of math. However, word problems represent how most people use math in everyday life, and the SAT includes these problems to test students’ ability to reason logically and solve problems.
