The city has one of the country’s best live literary scenes, with a diverse range of styles and genres and a welcoming environment for new writers.

They have gone on to receive Stegner Fellowships and grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, and their work has been included in anthologies such as Best New American Voices, the O'Henry Awards, American Poetry: The Next Generation, The New American Poets, and Beyond the Frontier: Contemporary African-American Poetry.

We are located in a rich literary community, with an abundance of fiction and poetry readings, including readings at Georgetown, Howard, Johns Hopkins, George Mason, George Washington, American University, and the PEN/Faulkner, and a variety of local bookstores.They help you master the highly challenging genre of poetry, introducing you to new styles, because they’re not committed to just one aesthetic—they’re committed to good work.Our faculty includes award-winning, experimental poets: Columbia College Chicago’s Poetry MFA alumni write their own stories of success.Since 1972, the University of Arizona has offered one of the preeminent MFA programs in the country for the study of creative writing.With workshops and craft seminars in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, we offer intensive instruction in literary craft and the study of literature from a writer’s perspective, as well as opportunities to strengthen professional skills and flourish as a writer.Each year the Program in Creative Writing, in conjunction with the Jiménez-Porter Writers' House brings visiting writers to visit workshops and read in the Writers Here & Now series.In the Master of Fine Arts in Poetry program at Columbia College Chicago, you’ll see and be seen: You’ll meet visiting, critically acclaimed poets and learn from top-notch faculty members who will work with you one-on-one as you hone your writing skills and take risks in an open-minded environment.Our Visiting Writers program brings to campus some of the best authors writing in the English language (and outside of it) to work with our students in small workshops.In addition, our students take advantage of Mason’s proximity to Washington, D.Your experience at Columbia will help you develop the high level of skill and critical thinking you need to produce creative, effective poetry in your own unique voice.In your first of two years at Columbia, you’ll take workshops as part of your initial graduate school experience, and you’ll dive into craft seminars and literature courses to study poetry as well as fiction and creative nonfiction.
