I said earlier that Dickens is not in the accepted sense a revolutionary writer.

This is a real shame, because it means that they miss out on some of his greatest writings.

In fact, you could make a compelling argument that the most important book he wrote was actually , because it dealt with Orwell's own experiences and with the real life events of the Spanish Civil War, had to be reckoned with by those on the Left who continued to support Communism even after it's brutal nature had become obvious.

One can say of Orwell, as he says of Dickens, that what we carry away from his writing is his "hatred of tyranny." This hatred is Orwell's negative virtue, but his positive virtues are an abiding humanism, relentless honesty and a thorough moral grounding.

His humanism ironically comes through in his Reflections on Gandhi.
