The material consisted of 113 essays from the humanities and natural sciences sub-test of the Finnish matriculation (final) examination after the upper secondary level.
For the teacher assessing student essays the most convenient and obviously the most common approach is to scrutinize how correct or incorrect, how much or little, how accurate or inaccurate the information the students have about the subject is.
Teachers often emphasize the quantitative examination of essays because it is far more complicated to evaluate the qualitative characteristics, such as the coherence and depth of the essay.
