The Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest honors notable full-time teachers of history (and related fields such as social studies, government, and citizenship education) in public, private, and parochial schools, grades 5-12.
These teachers have demonstrated excellence in: A chapter selects and honors an Outstanding Teacher of American History in the local community.
One of those challenges being citizens who are uninformed when it comes to debates on sexual misconduct and the “Me Too” movement, gun control, lack of voter participation and other hot button issues.
“By not keeping informed of the current issues, Americans do not know what other people are doing to solve these challenges,” Davis said.
Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.
The DAR chapter announces one school winner who will be recognized for their accomplishment at Honors Night in the spring.The top Good Citizen winner who will go on to compete at the state level is Davis.She wrote about how Americans have persevered through two world wars, the issue of racism and discrimination, terrorism and countless other issues, but it is guaranteed the country will face even harder challenges than ever before.“In my stories I write, I always like making details.I just tried to picture myself in the ‘20s and tried to imagine what would life be like for a kid my age.” Stamford High’s Vishnu Ramesh earned first place in the 10th-grade essay portion, while the first- and second-place winners for the 11th grade portion attend Westhill.Not pictured Chloe Henry, Merino High School, and Mariah Gohson, Sterling High School.Davis was selected as the overall winner whose essay will be submitted to the state competition.By Callie Jones News Editor The Elbridge Gerry Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recognized winners of this year’s DAR Good Citizens and American History essay contests Saturday at a patriotic reception held at Sterling Public Library.The Good Citizens contest is open to high school seniors, packets were sent out to 10 area high schools this year.” The 2019 Good Citizens are: Alexia Rose Hernandez, Caliche High School; Chloe Rianne Henry, Merino High School; Sarah Jean Davis, Peetz High School; Mariah Destiny Gohson, Sterling High School; Gunner Pierce Mc Entee, Julesburg High School; and Brooke Marie Sigmon, Fleming High School.Each student attending read their essay and then received a certificate, a membership card, a small U. Flag, information on the Constitution and the flag, a Good Citizen’s pin and its meaning, an ink pen, bookmark and a monetary award.
