He is a member or Fellow of a number of learned Societies, and was made a “Commander of the British Empire” (CBE) by the Queen in 1999 for services to Health and Life Sciences. He studied Chemistry at the State University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and received his Ph D in 2006.

A year later, he joined the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung as a postdoctoral research fellow where he became a Junior Group Leader in 2009.

At Imperial, he is a co-director of ICEPT (Centre for Energy Policy and Technology) and a member of the Bioeconomy Platform of Climate-KIC which is dedicated to the development of advanced biorenewables.

Biomass is any organic material which has stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy.Plants get bioenergy through photosynthesis, and animals get it by consuming plants.Humans can use this biomass in many different ways, through something as simple as burning wood for heat, or as complex as genetically modifying bacteria to create cellulosic ethanol.Brito Cruz has been the President of the State University at Campinas (Unicamp), and the President of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). Ferguson commenced as Director General of Science Foundation Ireland in January 2012 and as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland in October 2012.He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the AAAS, and he received the Ordre des Palmes Academiques de France, the Order of the Scientific Merit from the Federative Republic of Brazil, and the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Predominantly proceedings papers from both proceeding volumes as well as published in journals cite research articles (60–76 %).Largely, journal-based proceedings papers are cited rather than papers published in book series or volumes and have field impacts corresponding to research articles.
